Description
of Classes
Reading, Writing, and Math for Grades 1-4
These classes include phonics, reading, spelling, language, creative writing, and math skills with the level of difficulty corresponding to a student's abilities. Oral reading is especially stressed in the younger grades, and all students read at their own individual levels. They use the word processor for writing stories, poems, or reports. As part of the creative writing process, students learn to edit their stories before publishing. Use of capital letters, rules for punctuation, sentence structure, and paragraph formation are addressed. Art materials may be used to illustrate stories. Spelling includes the development of phonetic skills and review of rules which are also applied in reading. In math, students acquire skills in addition, subtraction, place value, regrouping, fractions, money, telling time, and measurement. The focus for the advanced or older students is on multiplication, division, decimals and fractions. Using manipulatives in all these areas helps students gain an understanding of a concept or process, enabling them to see patterns in numbers. There is time to pursue independent interests and activities during the class.
Language, Writing, and Math for Grades 4-6
Students edit their creative writing~ applying rules of grammar, punctuation and spelling. Written work includes paragraph formation, creative stories, descriptions, reports, poetry, and other forms of writing, which may be of interest to the students. They have access to the computer, as well as other materials, to research material. They may illustrate their final products. During math, the focus is on number concepts, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions, measurement, and problem solving. The difficulty of the problems depends upon the student's ability to understand the concepts and process. Other areas of interest may include spelling, keyboarding, map study skills, pre-algebra, and group projects which students help determine. There is time to pursue independent interests and activities at the end of the class.
Language, Writing, and Math for Grades 6-8
This class includes the writing of stories, descriptions, and reports. Organizational skills such as brainstorming, note taking, researching, and outlining are addressed. Using grammar rules and correct spelling, students edit their work before producing a final copy. They determine whether they are effectively putting their thoughts and ideas down on paper. Necessary revisions are made so that the written words become clearer to the reader. Students often work together on group projects, which they help determine. In math, skills in fractions, decimals, ratios, and percents are reviewed. The class is exposed to negative numbers and properties used in algebra. Students who have some experience with pre-algebra are challenged to work at their own levels. There is time at the end of each class for independent work and activities.
With the guidance of the teacher and input from parents, students in all classes list goals they would like to accomplish during the session. The areas of language arts, writing, and math are always included. Students who enroll in classes may be working on basic skills, maintaining skills already learned, or applying knowledge and creativity during enrichment activities. Since the classes are small and limited to six students, the individual needs of each student are always considered. Students become aware of their own learning styles, use their strengths, develop basic skills, and experience success in the learning process to become independent learners.
